The United States and the Dominican Republic share a strong partnership based on democratic values and historic people-to-people ties. On the occasion of the inauguration of President Luis Abinader for his second term as the president of the Dominican Republic tomorrow, President Joe Biden sent a senior Presidential Delegation led by Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm to extend his heartfelt congratulations to the government and the people of the Dominican Republic. Furthermore, the Biden-Harris Administration commits to continuing our support to the Dominican Republic in the areas of economic growth, energy, security, health, and human rights, and promoting a more democratic, secure, and prosperous Western Hemisphere. I want to thank the University Rotary for inviting me to speak today, and I also want to thank George Mauer for hosting me for lunch when we discussed the invitation.
George's son, Randy, is a member of Friends of the Dominican Republic's board of directors and served in the Dominican Republic from 2005 to 2009, both as a Volunteer and a Volunteer Leader. He was also the recipient of a Paul Harris Fellowship for graduate school following his PC experience.
I also want to tell you that Sala Sweet, whom I have known since 1984, served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ghana, a country with which she is still involved on a regular basis, although she completed her Peace Corps Service several years ago.
Finally, I want to introduce Franchesca Cornelio, a Dominican citizen who I met recently who lives and works in the Seattle area, and who I invited to be here today to hear about FDR's work in the Dominican Republic. Franchesca….

Opportunities to become involved with Friends of the Dominican Republic (FDR)
In addition to FDR’s two grant programs, FDR offers a variety of services for Returned Peace Corps Volunteers and staff members who served in the DR. These include a database of former DR Volunteers and PC staff members; La Voz, a regular electronic newsletter; assistance with Professional Development-Networking for Volunteers leaving the DR at the end of their service; and opportunities to work on several FDR projects such as the Community Challenge Fund; the DR In-Country Committee/Program Support Fund; Third Goal Program; the Communications-Website-Social Media Committee; the History Committee; the Membership Committee; the Growth Committee; and, the Fundraising Committee.
